HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS, by Jeaniene Frost: Cat and Bones are looking forward to a normal holiday – at least as “normal” as it gets for the combustible vampire couple and their otherworldly friends and family. But their yuletide plans are shattered when a stranger shows up and reveals long-buried family secrets that threaten to take a bite out of their holiday cheer...and lives.

My thoughts: I've read most of Sands' Argeneau books - and one of her historical romances - and I love her writing. Her story here, however, while enjoyable, was also a little boring, a little slow, a little same old same old. Fun but nothing special. Teddy is the police chief of and lives in the same little town as Elvi and Victor, from Book 7 in the Argeneau series, THE ACCIDENTAL VAMPIRE. So he's already familiar with the Argeneaus and their kind. Wanting to get away on his own during the holidays, Marguerite suggested a little cottage that he could rent. Little did he know that she was up to her usual matchmaking ways and had also suggested the neighboring cottage to Katricia Argeneau. And that a snowstorm would cause a tree to fall across the road, taking down a power line and effectively cutting them off from the rest of the world.

Teddy and Katricia pool their resources – she has food, he has firewood – and spend time hanging out in his cottage, talking and getting to know one another. You know how it's all gonna end, especially if your familiar with the series.

The Cat and Bones story on the other hand - I loved it. I can't get enough of them and Frost has not disappointed me yet. This story is a about 40 pages longer than the Sands story, and did not drag anywhere. The story opens with a surprise birthday party for Bones, which is crashed by a stranger who claims to be Bones' biological half brother. But while Bones, Mencheres, Kira and Spade all seem mesmerized by the stranger and his stories, Cat, Denise and Ian are suspicious of him, along with Fabian and Elisabeth. Cat finds herself actually working with Ian, and it was nice to see Ian become a little more likable.

Plenty of action, with a plot that I couldn't quite predict. I truly love this series.

One Grave At A Time (Night Huntress, Book 6)

My thoughts: This entry in the series picks up right where the previous book left off, with Cat and Bones still in the graveyard, having just defeated Apollyon. Cat has just discovered that her Uncle Don, who died in the previous book, is now a ghost and has been covertly watching her. Hence, her yelling out at him in the first line of the prologue (as she did in the last line of the previous book).

I was glad to see Don is still around! Unfortunately, while Tate has been promoted into Don's old position at the compound, the government has sent in an “operations consultant”, Madigan, who is a grade A prick, as Cat soon finds out. In fact, he tightens ship and adds so much additional security that Cat is not allowed to visit her mother or the members of her old team, which prompts Justina to quit and settle in with her daughter and the son-in-law she detests.

Previously, the Ghoul Queen of New Orleans had forced Cat to drink her blood, giving Cat her power to call ghosts to her side. Now Elisabeth has shown up. Fabian has a crush on Elisabeth, but most of the ghostly world give her the cold shoulder, because she has spent all of her ghostly years with one mission – to kill another ghost. Kramer, a zealot witch hunter who turns to flesh every Halloween and tortures and kills three women. Not actual witches, but Kramer believes all women are evil and should be burned at the stake.

This book was a departure from previous entries in the series as Cat and Bones didn't have many dealings with other vampires, besides Spade and Ian. The focus is on finding Kramer and finding a way to destroy him permanently, before he has a chance to kill again.

Along with Elisabeth, we have another new character, Tyler, a medium who Spade recommends. Tyler provides a lot of comic relief. He's not a fighter, he ogles Bones and then finds Spade even more delish, he loves his dog, Dexter, and even though he's often scared witless he is determined to help Bones and Cat in their quest.

I really enjoyed this entry, and I'm very sad that there isn't another one after this one. Although Cat and Bones certainly deserve some downtime so they can just enjoy being together without some villain to fight.

I think this is my second favorite series ever (after the Outlander series, by Diana Gabaldon). I'm going to miss Cat, and especially Bones, who I have a huge crush on. Sigh. 

This Side of the Grave (Night Huntress, Book 5)

But the price of her assistance may prove more treacherous than even the threat of a supernatural war...to say nothing of the repercussions Cat never imagined.

First line: The vampire pulled on the chain restraining him to the cave wall.

My thoughts: Several thoughts have run through my head as I prepared to write this, but everything I want to say might be considered a plot spoiler for someone. So briefly, Apollyon is still inciting the ghoul nation, warning his followers that Cat will be their downfall; Masterless vampires are going missing; and things are getting tenser and tenser between the vamps and the ghouls. Cat and her crew need to find a way to stop Apollyon. There is another visit to the underground lair of Marie Laveau, a secret mission for Dave the ghoul, some drama with Don, and ghosts. The ending is very satisfactory, and leaves an interesting and enticing set up for next book.

Eternal Kiss of Darkness (Night Huntress World, Book 2)

But with danger closing in, Mencheres must choose either the woman he craves, or embracing the darkest magic to defeat an enemy bent on his eternal destruction.

First line: Mencheres smelled blood even before he caught the earthy scent of ghouls clustered on the ground floor of the decrepit warehouse.

My thoughts: I love the Night Huntress Books. I love Cat, and I especially love Bones. The Night Huntress World books are spin-offs, featuring supporting characters from the other books. This one features Mencheres, Bones' grand-sire. Mencheres is, in his own words, “older than dirt”. He's also extremely powerful and has been well known for his visions of the future. However, he's recently lost that power and now he only has one vision – of a vast darkness. He takes this vision to be a portent of his pending death.

Kira is a private detective, who is walking home from work one night and hears the sounds of someone in pain coming from an old warehouse. Unable to walk away from someone who may need help, she goes into the warehouse where she sees Mencheres being tortured. Despite her fear, she pulls out her gun and demands “put down your knives”. Of course, since the torturers are ghouls, Kira is the one who ends up having to be saved by Mencheres.

After getting her to safety, Mencheres prepares to mesmerize her into forgetting what she saw. Except it doesn't work. He stares into her eyes, and she looks right back at him, and nothing happens. He thinks maybe it's because he forced some of his blood down her throat to heal her wounds – maybe his blood has made her temporarily immune. So he tells her that he cannot allow her to leave until the effects wear off and he can mesmerize her.

In the Cat and Bones books, Mencheres was never one of my favorite characters. I want to say I didn't dislike him, yet I think in a way I did. Maybe because Cat disliked him...I'm not sure why. Getting to know him and learning more about his background is nice. I like him a lot more now. Not as much as I like Bones, but then I'm starting to realize I may never like another vampire as much as I like Bones. Seriously. I'm head over heels about Bones. Which is a little embarrassing at my age, I mean for Pete’s sake, he's a fictional character in a book.

I do really like Kira, however. She's a wounded soul, who's heart was broken in the past, along with her dreams of being a police officer. She lives a pretty solitary life, not being close to anyone besides her younger sister, Tina. She doesn't want be attracted to Mencheres. Well, who in their right mind wants to be attracted to a vampire anyway. Especially when they've only just learned that vampires do exist.

Anyway, there's an enemy of Mencheres who wants his power and will stop at nothing to get it, there's lots of conflict and battles and hiding out and longing looks and self-discovery and so forth.

I enjoyed this book very much. Much more than the first Night Huntress World book. My understanding is that the next book will feature Vlad, and I'm looking forward to it, though I really wish Ms. Frost would give us a book about Tate.
