My thoughts: I don’t usually like to read series books out of order, but I also know with Harlequin category romance series the books can usually be read as standalones, so when the author offered ARC copies of this, the second book in her Fresh Pond Security series, I jumped at the chance and was very excited to receive a copy. And while I subscribe to the author’s monthly newsletter, I will confess a little secret – I’d not ever actually read any of her books before now.

I’m happy to say that I was thoroughly impressed. It’s very well written, with fully developed and fleshed out characters. When we meet Noah, who other readers had already met in the first book, enough information about the events of that book was seamlessly woven into the narrative that I didn’t feel lost or wondering what I had missed. On the contrary, I was very intrigued by Fiona and especially Jason, who occasionally seemed like a bit of a jerk here, that I’ve already ordered the first book in the series and look forward to diving into their story.

But back to Zoe and Noah. We meet Zoe as she’s on her way to her sister’s apartment to check on her dog, and we quickly learn that Zoe has spent most of her adult life looking out for her twin. It’s obvious that Zoe is the nurturer in the family. When she is attacked in her sister’s apartment, Noah, who works for Fresh Pond Security, happens to be stationed outside the building doing surveillance, and rushes to her rescue. Thinking, of course, that she is Allison, a hard hitting television news journalist working on a corruption expose which has put her life in danger.

Allison. I didn’t much like Allison. She and Zoe may be twins, but they and their lives are worlds apart. Zoe is a schoolteacher, and is thoughtful and considerate. Allison seemed to be thoughtless and inconsiderate, walking all over Zoe. Indeed, at one point her selfish actions put Zoe and the others in even more danger. Of course we don’t get to know Allison as well or get inside her head the way we do with Zoe, but I very much admired Zoe. Noah’s boss wants her to impersonate Allison and go to the television studio, with Noah along pretending to be Allison’s boyfriend, so that Noah can do some covert spying/information tracking. Zoe is naturally afraid, and I really liked that her responses, her feelings and fear, were portrayed realistically for a civilian who does not have any training, security, self-defense, or otherwise. But she does have guts.

I loved Noah. He’d been sidelined to a desk job after taking a bullet on his previous assignment, and being out in the field, guarding Zoe and being active in this investigation, is his chance to prove himself. Close quarters and facing danger together often leads to attraction, but the author allowed their feelings for each other to build up slowly. Of course the events take place over a fairly short period of time, but the relationship still did not feel rushed.

The supporting characters were never wasted in this tense and engrossing story. Once the action ramped up it was nonstop, and for awhile it all felt pretty hopeless, as I had no idea what would happen next or how Zoe would survive. My thoughts: This third book in the Missing in Alaska series didn’t capture me quite the way the first two books did, and I’m still not really sure why that is. I think that I just wasn’t really drawn to Nolan, the hero. Compared to the heroes of the first two books, he was just a little...bland.

Ivy has traveled from Florida to Alaska in search of a long lost Jack London manuscript. Ivy is a former FBI agent who left the FBI to work in the family business after her mother was diagnosed with cancer. She has been blackmailed into locating the manuscript by her deceased father’s old business partner, who has threatened to reveal a secret about her father to her mother. Ivy is desperate to find the manuscript, desperate to keep her mother from learning this secret and I struggled a little with this aspect of the story. Her mother doesn’t have a lot of time left, and instead of spending that time with her Ivy is racing around the Alaskan wilderness. Of course we, the reader, don’t learn the secret until the very end of the book, but a former FBI agent allowing herself to be blackmailed? It just didn’t sit right with me.

Well, I guess I do actually know why the book didn’t quite capture me the way the first two did! Despite all of the above, the narrative is wonderfully written, as Ms. Goddard’s writing always is, and her descriptions of the Alaskan wilderness are evocative. And of course I did get very caught up in the story, while also a little worried about Nolan and Ivy getting their happily ever after. I don’t know if there will be a fourth book, but if so I will definitely want to read it.

My thoughts: I have a new favorite author! I was literally laughing out loud at the banter between the characters less than ten pages in, so I knew I was going to enjoy this. Although I will admit that the huge family tree at the front of the book gave me a little trepidation about keeping all the characters straight. However, the main characters are the ones who count, and I didn’t actually have any issues after all.

Landry has isolated herself and her daughter, Eliza, at The Haven, the resort where she lives and works, selling her pottery and giving pottery lessons to the affluent guests. It’s been three years since she was widowed and fled to Gossamer Falls to get away from her inlaws, at the invitation of her best friend, Bronwyn. She’s starting to feel safe and settled, and with the purchase of a small plot of land, ready to have a real home for herself and Eliza. Enter Cal, who runs a construction company with his brothers. When Landry comes to Cal about building her home, he’s intrigued by her, but he’s vowed to never date a single mother due to an issue in his past. And since Landry isn’t interested in a relationship either, they agree that they are going to be good friends. Little do they know!

I liked that they built a solid friendship first, as I do love a slow burn. The author does a wonderful job filling out their characters, letting us inside their heads so we get to know them and understand their actions and motivations. This is a romantic suspense, but other than a major incident and mention of a smaller one, there’s not much suspense or action for the first half of the book. Not that I’m complaining – as much as I love adrenaline rush action I’m drawn in more by character driven stories over plot driven. I really liked Landry, who is brave and strong and determined to give Eliza a happy life. And I absolutely loved Cal, who often made me laugh. Another thing I’m very drawn to is humor in a romance. The narrative breezes along, often with light moments but still touching on some darker ones. Just like real life. And when the suspense portion of the story suddenly accelerated I was glued to the pages.

I loved how Cal’s family and friends kept referring to Landry and Eliza as “your girls”, to which he responded with quick denials. I think my favorite scene in the whole book was when Cal finally admitted it to himself. But truthfully, I loved the whole book. I’m very much looking forward to the next one.

My thoughts: Another wonderfully written, action packed romantic suspense from Ms. Goddard! In this second book in the Missing in Alaska series, Carrie is a pilot in Shadow Gap, ferrying passengers around Alaska, delivering supplies to residents living in remote areas, and whatever else is needed of her. When Trevor arrives in Alaska looking for answers to his sister’s disappearance, Chief Autumn Long, the heroine of the first book, recommends Carrie as a guide. Carrie is reluctant, as she’s about to leave for a long awaited vacation, and despite being intrigued by Trevor, she refers him to another local pilot. But when Carrie’s business partner, mentor, and best friend is murdered, her whole life is turned upside down, for the second time.

I really liked and admired Carrie. Ten years ago she miraculously survived an attack on her life, and still carries the emotional and physical scars. She’s worked hard to overcome adversity, and flying brings her peace and comfort. I loved Trevor. He uprooted his own life to help his sister escape an abusive marriage, and thought she’d created a good life for herself, only to have her disappear without a trace on a vacation to Alaska, leaving only a handful of photos for Trevor to decipher.

So we have two mysteries running concurrently as it becomes clear that someone does not want Trevor investigating his sister’s disappearance, and it becomes clear that someone is trying to kill Carrie. I love an Alaskan setting. The wild land, the mountains, the seclusion, all lend themselves to the perfect backdrop for mystery, suspense, action, danger, and survival. But we also get an engaging story and great character studies of Carrie and Trevor and what drives them. I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

My thoughts: I really really enjoyed this one. Bri is an arson investigator, called out to investigate a fire that killed a retired arson investigator. She’s irritated when her boss calls in the ATF and tells her she’ll be working with an ATF Special Agent, but Marc is not quite what she expects and she’s intrigued by him. As he is by her. Bri is a wonderfully nuanced character. A former smokejumper, her life was changed after a fall caused by a malfunctioning parachute, the physical effects of which still linger. Just prior to that, she had a bad experience with a fellow smokejumper wooing her and then showing his ugly side. So getting closer to Marc or having any type of relationship with him is not in her plans. Marc, meanwhile, left his big time job to move home when his grandmother was diagnosed with cancer. He doesn’t have a bad relationship behind him, but his plan is to get focus on his grandmother and his new career and not get back into the dating pool for awhile, so pursuing Bri is not on his agenda. I loved the slow build up of the relationship between Bri and Marc, which often took a backseat to the investigation. Because this isn’t just a love story. This is a romantic suspense, and the author provides plenty of the latter as Bri becomes a liability to the serial killer who’s victims are dying in fires made to look like accidents.

The mystery of who was setting the fires and why was very well done. I was a little stunned when we finally learned who the culprit was. The writing and the characterization are wonderful and engaging. There is a lot of action as the investigation ramps up, as well as the danger to Bri, but we also get to know both Bri and Marc really well, as we’re inside their heads and privy to what makes them tick. I really liked Bri, and I loved Marc.

Irene Hannon is quickly becoming a favorite author who’s entire backlist I want to read now.

My thoughts: I’ve only previously read six books by Nora Roberts and for the most part I’ve enjoyed them (especially BLACK HILLS which I highly recommend). But this one...just wasn’t at all what I expected I guess. I didn’t love it, didn’t hate it, but it was a bit of a slog to get through. I mean, when work is really busy it can take me longer to read a book, but this one took a month. Literally a month minus one day. Part of it was the writing style, which I do not remember from her previous books.

When she went over to join him, sat, she let out a sigh.

Smiling, Olivia reached down, gripped Morgan’s chin, gave it a gentle wiggle.

Those are just two small examples of the myriad sentences in the book with multiple commas and an absence of such words as “and” or “then”. I found it a bit jarring. And while I read an uncorrected digital galley of the book, meaning those quoted lines could of course be changed in the final copy, there are so many instances of the issue I’m complaining about that I’m confident they are not typos that will be edited or fixed but rather an artistic choice by the author.

I expected a romantic suspense story. There was very little suspense until the very end, and while there is a romance it wasn’t particularly romantic, other than the occasional passage here and there. I did quite like the hero, Miles, but as appealing as he was he didn’t seem fleshed out as much as the heroine. Which, of course it’s really her story, so that could have also been a choice the author made.

Overall, I enjoyed some parts much more than others, and I did love the relationship between the heroine and Howl, the hero’s dog. But I probably could have misplaced the book (or lost it from my Kindle app) at any point in the story and not been invested enough to really care if I never finished it. Regardless, I will continue to read Ms. Roberts’ books since I have very much enjoyed some of her in the past.

Cold Light of Day (Missing in Alaska, Book One)

My thoughts: When this book came up for review, I didn’t even read the synopsis. Just the word “Alaska” and the author’s name were enough for me to know I wanted to read it. I’ve loved all of the author’s books that I’ve read so far, and lately I’ve been drawn to anything set in Alaska.

Autumn Long is the police chief in the small town of Shadow Gap, following in her father’s footsteps. Currently, the city council members are considering relieving her of her position, driving by Wally, who is pushing for his nephew to take over as police chief. On top of that, she’s suddenly faced with a small crime wave in her town, the likes of which Shadow Gap has never experienced before. So she’s got her hands full and plenty of stress on her plate.

Grier Brenner is an outsider who showed up in Shadow Gap to do some fishing, and then stuck around. That’s all Autumn knows about him, other than the fact that she finds him attractive and is drawn to him, feelings she does her best to ignore. I loved Autumn, but Grier was definitely the bigger draw for me. We know nothing about his past and can only speculate along with Autumn, who decides he must be former military at the least. But when the narrative is focused on him, we do start getting hints along the way. He’s a mysterious stranger, and we know he’s in hiding, as he keeps trying to remind himself he’s not in Shadow Gap to make friends and needs to keep to himself. But he’s also human, and with the townsfolk being so open and friendly, he can’t keep himself from visiting the Lively Moose every morning to eat breakfast with his new buddies. Whatever is going on in Shadow Gap, with two bodies, found near each other but seemingly unrelated, it’s nothing to do with him and he needs to keep a low profile. And yet he finds it hard to not get involved…

Memories that felt like they were from another life chased him. And here he was, running after danger again. For all the right reasons – again.

As the happenings in Autumn’s life and Grier’s life began to converge, the plot got a little convoluted, but the tenseness and suspense kept it moving at a brisk pace. Autumn and Grier are both being hunted, and find themselves thrown together in investigating, with Autumn offering to hire Grier since he obviously has skills, and Grier refusing the offers, because a background check might give her too much information about him, but then sticking close and working with her unofficially because he feels a need to protect her.

As I seem to say about every title I read from Revell’s romantic suspense line, the author’s writing is wonderful. I loved the detail about the Alaskan wilderness, and Autumn’s feelings about Shadow Gap and how much she loves her town and her work. The supporting characters aren’t fleshed out much, with Grier’s new friends being interchangeable to me, but this is about Grier and Autumn, and they were very real and believable and I was wholly invested in their story.

All in all, a great start to the author’s newest series. I’m eagerly looking forward to the next book.
